Ballade No. 1 in G minor is the first of a four-part series that dates back to 1831 when Chopin was staying in Vienna. It was completed in 1835 after he moved to Paris.
What distinguishes Ballade No. 1 from the other 3 is the time signatures. The introduction is written in 4/4, the Presto con fuoco coda is written in 2/2 or 4/4 and the rest of the piece is written in 6/4 contrary to the 6/8 that characterizes the 3 others.
