Program notes. Chengdu is know for its teahouses and its teahouse culture. More than just a place to have tea, these are spaces where people come together for conversation, play games, or just while away the time. "Three teahouses" is not program music, but in a wider sense it plays with the notions of conversation and stillness versus activity. The four voices in this piece tell independent stories, agreeing or disagreeing; like good friends, they can be close together or far apart, each reflecting their nature but rejoicing in what they share.
